This course provides an overview of current issues and research in international finance.
We will discuss the causes and consequences of international capital flows as well as the implications of international capital flows for the determination of prices and incomes. The first part of the seminar will be devoted to asset-based models of exchange rate and price level determination, and the second to open economy macroeconomic models of the short and medium run. The final third will be oriented around a series of student-led presentations of various case studies, from a progress report on “Euroland” to the lessons of the East Asian and Argentine crises, from the role of macroeconomic policies in African economic development to the experience of the transition economies. Goal of the course is to introduce you to a wide variety of topics in international finance and to give you the tools to write a research paper in the field.
